About Ortho-Bionomy
Definition: ortho = correct; bio = life; nomy = study
Ortho-Bionomy is a healing art form that was developed by British osteopath Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls in the early 1970s. Inspired by osteopathic non-force techniques Ortho-Bionomy employs and communicates with the body’s natural, self-correcting mechanisms through physical, structural, and energetic techniques. The name was coined by Pauls as a reference to the principles of self-correction that are the basis of Ortho-Bionomy.
Ortho-Bionomy’s gentle approach is appropriate for people of all ages.
Clients typically seek out Ortho-Bionomy for the gentle relief of both acute and chronic pain arising from old injuries, trauma and stress, and for reconnecting body mind and spirit.
Client and practitioner work together as a team to discover and utilize the best techniques to address the client’s situation both in the session and through home self-care practices. By learning to work with the nervous system the practitioner tunes to the client’s comfort and the self-corrective reflexes. As a result, change can happen from the inside out. Each Ortho-Bionomy session is unique, creative, and in concert with the body’s individual corrective patterns.
“I am immensely grateful for the Ortho-Bionomy program at NMAHA. I feel honored to have learned so much from Ursula and Christina”
Jessica Sehested Mark, Asheville, NC
“I will study this for life! It’s a great parallel and reflection on living harmoniously with the self and with others”
Katherine Kim, Birmingham, AL
“My daughter was diagnosed as having scoliosis. The medical treatment would have included containing her back in a brace or cast for a number of months. Instead, in only 5 gentle, graceful sessions, working on and off the body, her 9-year-old spine was allowed to move itself back into its proper position.”

The next 3 week intensive is March 26 – April 12, 2012
Program tuition: $1,850 if paid in full by March 12, otherwise $2,100.
Training
The 500 hr Practitioner Training Program takes place over a two-year period. A three-week entry level intensive is followed by 4 additional weeks of classroom study once every few months. Study Groups meet between trainings to support learning. Students also complete Practical Studies as a means to tailor the educational process and receive feedback from their Instructors.
An Ortho-Bionomy Associate Level can be achieved after completing the entry level Intensive and appropriate evaluations. Once students complete the Associate Level, 3-week intensive training and the related requirements, they may begin to use the term Ortho-Bionomy as part of their bodywork practice.
Another complete 500 hr Advanced Practitioner Training Program allows students to further their studies and, if interested, qualify for the Instructor Training Program.
Ortho-Bionomy students or Practitioners seeking Continuing Education may enroll in any class for which they have the pre-requisite. CE Credit for any Practitioner Training curriculum class can be counted toward the Practitioner Training Program requirements. Program credit is not given for Introduction to Ortho-Bionomy weekends. NCBTMB and NAACOM CE’s are available.
No previous experience is required to begin Ortho-Bionomy training.
World Class Instructors
Students travel from all over the country and the world to study with these teachers, termed by many as “the best teachers of Ortho-Bionomy” . Because of the flexible class schedule, with modules occurring every few months, students may tailor the training to fit in with their schedule and their commitments.
Ursula Hofer and Christina Montes de Oca co-founded the NMAHA Ortho-Bionomy Programs in 1999.
Ursula has taught Ortho-Bionomy for over 25 years and approaches each class she teaches as a unique and special experience. Ursula travels throughout the United States to teach Ortho-Bionomy as well as train new instructors. Her exploration of the Biological Model of Trauma has greatly expanded the depth and effectiveness of both her private practice and teaching. Ursula is also an artist working with a variety of media including pastels, clay and wood.
Christina has been dedicated to the dynamic and creative process of teaching Ortho-Bionomy for the last 20 years. Creating a learning environment that supports students to excel in the work and make it their own continually inspires her study and practice of this elegant modality. Her exploration of healing arts has also included long-time studies in Tai Chi. She teaches and works with both practitioner and instructor trainees in the US, New Zealand and Australia.
Ursula is also the president of Ortho-Bionomy In Schools, a non-profit organization which is dedicated to supporting children with Ortho-Bionomy. Since 2007 Christina has participated as a Practitioner in a project bringing O-B to a public school in Santa Fe, NM.
